Web Throttling: How will it affect you?
Web Throttling: What does it all mean? The CRTC ruled this week that internet service
providers such as Bell and Rogers could "throttle" their traffic, but only after
giving their customers fair notice. In other words, they can slow down internet
service to customers for things like downloads and streaming to... save themselves
some money. On the surface, this seems like a disaster for internet users but the
fact is, this ruling actually helps us. Before this ruling, there were no restrictions
on throttling and the large ISP's did it all the time. Now they have to publicize
their throttling and give notice of at least 30 days to their customers.
For more information, check out this excellent article in the globe and mail. The
comments at the bottom of the article are also very insightful, for the most part.
